I thought this might interest anyone in need of a large inexpensive ($20) info display on their project that needs only a few pins for a serial port. I came across this 24x8 ( 8 rows, 24 characters per row) character LCD on Ebay here:

A few quick specs:
- selectable 2400 to 19200 Baud
- 5V
- no backlight (*sigh*)
- comes with two ports, DB9 for RS232 serial (read: PC or MAX232) and 8x2 pin connector for power and TTL level serial
- the $20 includes shipping and handling

Data is sparse. He claims to supply (a) data sheet(s?) with this when it ships. He eludes to other sources of info, some of which produce "Not Found" server messages. I was thinking I'd just hook up a Nano, do some experimenting, and report back with the results as an app note.

I'll say one thing for the guy, he do ship fast!
Works as advertised, at 19200 Baud, out of the box. He says it can be powered off 5V or a voltage in of 7 to 12 Vdc. I found where to connect the raw DC and supplied +12V. Using jumper wires, I supplied that and ground and a TTL serial signal from P8 of the Nano driver board. A quick program with a FOR - NEXT loop sending characters of values 33 to 127 out the P8 pin (using n19200, of course) exercised it enough to fill the entire display and show all the cells worked. Then a quick test with a PC using the DB9 connector and HyperTerminal showed that worked also.

But, He did NOT supply key data sheets with it as promised. And the solder jobs on his daughter board are scarey bad. I will have to touch all these up before going much further. And there is no display backlight.
Then again, for $20 (including shipping), I can't really knock it. If you want a large LCD display to attach to a project, this should do the job.

Added later: I contacted the seller in an email. He provided a schematic of the daughter board, which is his contribution to the effort. He also provided some other info. This was an easy product to set up and use.

A major pain about this is the glare. The swingin' face glass on this is super reflective. Imagine trying to read a newspaper through a one-way mirror in a low-light situation and that's this to a 'T'.

You made a great job my friend to have an experiment. Fortunately, the seller provided a schematic of the daughter board. I am interested to see the outcome.

The picture in the first posting pretty much says it all. What are looking for exactly? The test code in Studio BASIC? The daughter board schematic? I'm not sure where I placed that after receiving it, but it's on the PC someplace.
