I made a thread about this before, but it never got fixed.
2 problems.


1: I have to log back in every day, regardless of the auto login check box.
Sometimes i don't even have to log in, sometimes i just need to open a subforum or thread and it'll show me logged in, where previously it says i was not.
This really messes with me, and it's an old problem, and i think it's about time it gets fixed.

problem 2:
Can't re-edit post after a certain amount of time.
Sometimes i the edit button vanishes after 10 minutes, sometimes after an hour or two, it's inconsistent which is as annoying as the problem itself.
May it be, i catch a typo, while re-reading a post i made days earlier, or i simply want to change or add more info.

Both of these problems are probably easy fixes that have just been ignored. Or touching them could break the internet, i don't know.

1. I've tried to get this fixed too. Our web guy can't seem to figure out what the problem is with it.

2. I think this may be related to problem one. If you are not logged in you can't edit your old posts. So if you are logged in randomly it could be the edit button is disappearing because it thinks you aren't logged in anymore.

What Browser are you using? Also make sure cookies are enabled. From what I understand that is how the site knows you are still you.

I thought it was my cookies too, so i deleted all cookies regarding bmicro and the forums. My browser does accept cookies.
Furthermore the problem happens on IE8.

It's not a login problem, for #2, as regardless of how i login, i can't edit a post after so much time. Like my previous post on this thread, i can not edit it even now.
You probably wont notice this with your admin settings as you can edit anyones post at any time.
I'm pretty sure this is a configurable option, as i've seen it on other forums in the past. Essentially it's to allow people enough time to correct a typo, or something like that, but make them unable to cancel or delete a post.
This is usually so when forum-flame wars happen, various users can't delete the evidence of their wrong doings, should things get out of hands.

Well, I can't add any mods(requires direct server access which I don't have and wouldn't know where to start if I did ). We'll have to wait for our web guy to look at it and he is part time so don't count on any changes to the edit timeout anytime soon. I've looked at it and I can change the board wide settings but I'm not going to. If I make the timeout unlimited across the board I think it will open the door to spammers. If you(users in general) need to update the information in a post you can add another post to the thread with the updates. Currently the timeout is set for 90 minutes so you should have plenty of time to edit a single post.

As for you specifically(eg Fallentine), If you are posting things like reviews and tutorials and such I think you need moderator privledges which should let you edit posts. Email Dale about doing that and what forums you need the privledges for.

I might be missing the point, but use the "PREVIEW" button instead of the submit button, and you can see what you're about to post, and go back and edit as many times as you wish (but don't forget to finally post!).

But yes, I do often edit after I've posted.

As to the login, funny stuff happens. I was "locked out" on my home office machine, but not on my laptop, or my machine at work for several weeks. Watch out for "saved" passwords by Firefox. It's all good now!

The point Fallentine is making is she wants to edit here posts more than 90 minutes after they are posted(eg the next day or week). I can definitely see the need to do this in some situations(eg when posting tutorials and such).

I think the 90 minute window is fine for most posters. In the special cases we can elevate specific users privledges.

I get that. And I may be needing similar privileges soon as well. It's good that these needs can be accommodated.

If the window is there to stop spammers. then i have an idea.
Alter the script so that the limit only kicks in for users with a certain post count.
IE if they have less than 30 post, it'll kick in.
I assume is a spammer intends to do such acts (not sure why they would) they probably won't have more than 30 post.

And any person with >30 post that's a spammer, we'd probably see something going on with their posting style that would indicate they aren't serious.
For example, if they were posting jibberish, or stuff that wasn't really atom related.

Sounds like a good idea, however it will have to wait until we can get someone who knows phpBB3 to do it. Now if there are any volunteers that know phpBB3 scripts I'm all ears.

Sadly i do not know phpbb3.
But you might be able to find scripts available.
An alternative would be to add automatic ranking, and add more ranks.

Such as
Unproven___<30 post, 90minute timout
Proven______31-100 post, 24 hour timeout
Member_____101+ no time out
Etc..

If you guys don't find a solution or a script, i'll simply ask on the phpbb3 forums.
I searched, but sometimes searching doesn't cut it, as the search function doesn't understand the specifics.

Another problem i found with the forums.

View active topics.

I'd really like to see this properly working. The guys at lynxmotion have theirs working right.
I don't even check individual forums over at lynxmotion i just check the active topics.

If we had that working here, it would make the "helpers" roles a lot easier. Kenjj, Acidtech, and the many others that are so helpful on the forums.

Myself, I never check active items. I tend to use "View New Items" most, and occasionally I look at "View Unanswered Posts" to see if anyone has been left to swing in the wind. Those two seem to work, at least to me.

Same here. New posts and unanswered post do seem to work correctly. I think the problem with active topics is it requires a threshold. I set it to 5 but I doesn't seem to be brining up anything new. So either it's broken or there is something else that needs to be set or the threshold needs to be lower (but I think any lower than 5 would be too low).

I'm not sure about ranking. There are levels of privlege but they have to be manually assigned other than the default one.
